Visiting with your dog
Ensuring a paw-fect experience on the coast with your best friend
We love dogs, and want to make sure that your four-legged friends enjoy their time on the Norfolk Coast as much as you do! To help guarantee wagging tails and smiling faces, we’ve put together a few simple pointers for visiting the coast with your dog below.

Keep your dog close to you
We know your dog just wants to explore, but to our sensitive species such as beach-nesting birds and seals, they will appear as a predator. Any disturbance, even for just a few seconds, can have a major impact on their wellbeing, causing stress, injury and even the abandonment of nests and young. To give them the best chance of surviving and thriving, keep your dog close by and stick to paths where possible (walk along the foreshore at the beach). If you spot wildlife, maintain a distance of at least 100 metres and put your dog on a short lead.

Follow all signage and guidance
We want everyone to access and enjoy our beautiful coast, so rest assured that any restrictions are carefully considered and there for a reason. Our landscape is alive and evolving, with migratory species coming and going, annual breeding seasons and highly sensitive, changing habitats. We adapt our guidance to ensure the ongoing safety of both wildlife and visitors, so please follow instructions wherever you find them. Our friendly volunteers and wardens will be very happy to explain any restrictions and answer your questions.

Be sure to scoop the poop!
We all have a part to play in keeping our countryside beautiful and healthy for years to come, and that includes cleaning up after your dog. Even if it’s away from the path, dog waste can cause real harm, contaminating local crops and water sources and spreading harmful bacteria and disease. So please, pick it up and put it in the bin. If you can’t find a bin, bring a container with you so that you can take it away and dispose of it at home. There are great long-lasting containers available to keep everything separate and hygienic, so there’s no excuse!
Planning ahead
Depending on where you’re headed on the Norfolk Coast, there may be seasonal restrictions in place for dogs. It’s always best to plan ahead to avoid any disappointment, so check what the rules are at your chosen destination before you travel.
