We’re excited to announce that applications for the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) programme are now open.
FiPL was launched by Defra in 2021, creating new funding opportunities for farmers and land managers across National Landscapes. Since then, we’ve supported 71 projects, with over £1 million in funding awarded in and around the Norfolk Coast National Landscape.
We’re looking for projects that enhance the local environment, reduce the effects of climate change, protect cultural heritage, and improve public access across the Norfolk Coast. From small practical improvements to larger collaborative projects, FiPL funding could help make your ideas for improving the National Landscape a reality.
Enhancing nature
Perhaps you’re planning work to support wildlife on your land, or you’re already delivering projects to enhance nature. FiPL may be able to help you take it further. We’ve supported workshops for a local farm cluster, teaching participants how to create wild bee habitats. We’ve also funded pond restorations to encourage turtle doves (a protected species) to breed and created wildflower meadows using local seed to increase biodiversity.
Reducing the effects of climate change
We welcome applications for projects that can deliver environmental benefits for the landscape and local communities. In previous years, funding has been awarded for projects such as sand dune restoration at Hunstanton, where marram grass acts as a natural sea defence; a compost-turning machine to cut methane emissions and store carbon in soils; and drones for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service to help manage and mitigate the growing risk of wildfires.
Protecting cultural heritage
FiPL grants can also support projects that help conserve the special character and heritage of the Norfolk Coast for future generations. We’ve awarded project grants to make repairs to the Iron Age fort at Holkham Estate, restore a traditional saffron barn, and support traditional reed cutting at Cley.
Improving access to nature
FiPL funding has contributed to new boardwalks at Brancaster and Holkham, helping more people enjoy the coast while protecting fragile coastal habitats. If you have an idea to help improve accessibility to our landscape or connect people with nature, we’d love to hear from you.
