Brancaster boardwalk

Accessible

Inclusive

A new accessible boardwalk at Brancaster was installed to make it easier for visitors of all ages and abilities to explore Norfolk’s beautiful coastline.

Forming part of the Norfolk Coast Path National Trail, the 2km Brancaster boardwalk offers views of spectacular wildlife and scenery.

The original wooden walkway was used by more than a million visitors each year and had begun to break down in the tough marine environment.

The new boardwalk was designed to be more accessible and inclusive, featuring:

  • A path wide enough for wheelchair users and pushchairs, with frequent passing places and wide-berth gates
  • High-contrast bumper strips to help people living with dementia or those with visual impairments
  • Resting spots and viewing platforms that allow users to take a break and enjoy the views of Norfolk Coast National Landscape

The boardwalk passes through highly protected saltmarsh habitat and coastal landscape which is home to many rare and threatened species such as the bearded tit, the marsh harrier and the natterjack toad.

The non-slip material used is made partly from recycled plastic bottles and is expected to last for at least 75 years, compared to the 10-year lifespan of a traditional wooden
